The first problem of growing plants organically is that there has not been an effective system to provide sufficient nitrogen and other essential nutrients to have similar yields as inorganic traditional systems. The demand for organic product is growing faster than supply.
Consumers in North America and Europe are showing an increasing desire for organic food. Organic farming in Canada, and Ontario in particular, has steadily increased. The greatest expansion in the market has happened only in the last decade. Reasons for the increase in organic food production are as follows:
- organic food production currently commands a market premium of 2 to 2.5 times the conventional market price.
- the sector of consumers willing to pay the higher prices demanded by organic food is increasing.
- consumers desiring organic produce reside in Canada, USA, and Europe – all traditional marketing areas for Ontario produce
- lower input prices to produce food at the farm gate because no synthetic fertilizers and costly chemical sprays are used.
The first product we produce is an Keratin amino acid formula derived from organic keratin that has a number of unique features that a variety of solutions in organic agriculture and organic cosmetics.
We are actively researching and developing complete 100% organic hydroponic systems that will have yields that are comparable to inorganic chemical systems.
The second solution proposed is an organic fertilizer formed into a roll that can be applied to an organic farmers field before the growing season which will allow the ground temperature to accelerate to the point of germination 2-3 weeks ahead of traditional crop cycle
The worldwide market is reported to be $20 billion US (OCIA website). The greatest market share is in Europe, USA, and Japan. In these nations people have increasing concerns about health and environment, making organic food a natural solution. These nations have aggressive promotion and supportive government policies to address the desire for greater organic food consumption. According to the organic creditation association OCIA (Organic Crop Improvement Association), Australia and Argentina head the organic thrust with 7.7 and 3 million hectares, respectively. For Australia and Argentina organic production accounts for about 1.7% of those countries’ production area. Europe has the largest organic production area when assessed a percentage of total area under production (Italy at 6.5% and 0.9 million hectares; Austria at 8.4% and 0.14 million hectares; Finland at 6.8% and 0.28 million hectares). Canada has 0.19 million hectares, which represents only 0.25% of the production area.
There are a greater number of renderers who are providing feather meal as a slow release fertilizers across the world.
